Ethical sourcing of gemstones
Our Sourcing Model
Ethical Sourcing and Traceability
VividCarat is based in Beruwala, Sri Lanka — 2 minutes from China Fort market, one of the world's largest colored gemstone trading hubs. We buy directly from 4th-generation dealer families we have known for years. This proximity to the source is not a marketing claim — it is the operational reality that makes our pricing and traceability possible.
We believe ethical sourcing starts with knowing exactly who you are buying from and being able to look them in the eye. That's considerably easier when you're at the dealer's table every morning.
What Ethical Sourcing Means to Us
We define ethical sourcing by four commitments: fair treatment and safe working conditions for everyone in the supply chain; environmentally responsible mining practices; transparency about where our gems come from; and zero tolerance for conflict financing. These are not audit checkboxes — they are conditions of our ongoing business relationships.
Traceability From Source
We trace our gemstones from the following primary origins: sapphires and rubies primarily from Sri Lanka and Madagascar; emeralds from Zambia and Colombia; tanzanite from Tanzania; spinels from Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Our company directors make regular visits to key sourcing markets. Laboratory certificates confirm origin independently of what any dealer claims.
Standards We Enforce
No Child Labor
We follow International Labour Organization definitions for minimum working age in mining (15+). Children may accompany parents to market — they do not engage in hazardous work. Any supplier found to use child labor is immediately dropped, without exception.
Fair Pay and Dealer Relationships
We build long-term relationships with mining cooperatives and dealer families. We pay fair market rates negotiated directly with the source — not squeezed through a chain of intermediaries each extracting margin. When dealers know you'll be back tomorrow, they have a reason to deal honestly today.
Environmental Responsibility
We require mining practices that avoid damaging water sources. Water testing is conducted downstream from operations we source from. Land reclamation plans are a condition of our ongoing supplier relationships.
Zero Tolerance for Conflict Financing
We conduct thorough due diligence on exporters, suppliers, and mines. We audit paperwork for country of origin and exporter details. Anti-money laundering policies are enforced on all payments. Stones from conflict zones or with unclear chain of custody are not purchased — regardless of quality or price.
We welcome questions about origin and supply chain from any customer. If you want to know exactly where your stone came from, who handled it, and which lab certified it — ask us. That level of transparency is what direct sourcing enables and what we consider a basic obligation.
In Practice
How Direct Sourcing Protects You
When a stone passes through 5 or 6 middlemen before reaching you, each party in the chain adds margin and reduces accountability. A dealer in Phoenix cannot tell you which mine in Sri Lanka a sapphire came from — because they don't know. The person who bought it in Bangkok didn't know either.
We know. We were at the table when it was purchased. The laboratory certificate confirms the origin independently. That traceability is what you're buying when you work with VividCarat — not just a gemstone, but a documented, verifiable stone.
Your Purchase Has a Positive Impact
When you buy direct from a gemologist with established relationships at the source, a larger share of the purchase price reaches the people who found and traded the stone. That's a concrete improvement over retail chains where origin is unknown and the margin captured by intermediaries is substantial. We're happy to share more detail on our supply chain with any customer who asks.
